History of Halloween

Halloween has come a long way from when it was first started. It’s not celebrated quite the same but with some of its traditions that still carry on even today. October 31st is not considered to be the start of the New Year as in Celtic traditions but many pagans celebrates it as such. It was not named Halloween as it is commonly called today either it was called Samhain or all hallows eve. Superstition has been passed down through the generations as well. Other cultures celebrate it as the day of the dead, meaning the day when the spirits of the deceased are among us and people pay their respects to them. Halloween costumes was worn not as a decoration of celebration but thought to scare ghosts away from people.

A site that I found called (essortment.com) is one of many that discussed the origins of Halloween. (history.com) is another that offers some information on the origins of Halloween. Jack o lanterns is another tradition that has come with Halloween which were used to scare the spirits but now they are just thought as part of Halloween today. Candy is another thing that is different about Halloween from then to now. People in the times when Halloween was first celebrated went to the houses in their towns to get food for the feast that they were having in celebration. That later on was brought over to America and has turned in to a big candy buying market just as big as Easter or Christmas. For more information on the origins of Halloween you can find books online and at your local library. These books give you a better idea of what it was like in that time period as to now and how Halloween was celebrated.
